In plain English

National Grid wants a specialist company to manage the full life of its used SF₆ gas, an insulating gas used in high-voltage electrical equipment. This means collecting the gas from its sites, cleaning and reprocessing it for reuse, storing it, delivering it back when needed, and safely destroying any gas that cannot be recovered. The contract also requires a digital system that tracks every batch of gas from start to finish.

What the buyer wants

• Collect, transport, store and test used SF₆ from National Grid sites across England and Wales, and process it back to reusable Technical Grade SF₆ with certified analysis. • Manage a dedicated National Grid gas stockpile, deliver certified gas to sites (including urgent orders), and safely dispose of non-recoverable gas only when instructed in writing. • Run a digital tracking and inventory system giving real-time visibility, unique batch and consignment IDs, full audit trails and certificates for every movement.

Likely requirements

Our reading of the notice. Always check the tender documents.

Without its own licensed reclamation and destruction facilities, secure storage capacity, and the ability to transport compressed gas nationally under ADR, a small business would be unable to meet the core requirements of this contract.

How to bid

This is a framework: the buyer picks a set of suppliers now and awards work to them over several years. If you are not on it when it is awarded, you usually cannot win work from it until it is re-tendered, so this is the window to bid.
