In plain English

Kier Transportation, working for Network Rail (the rail infrastructure operator), needs a contractor to build a new road bridge and its surrounding structures at Manchester Airport railway station. The bridge is part of a project to add platform capacity so that longer trains can run to the airport. Much of the work uses precast concrete sections supplied by the client, and the contractor would handle concrete, drainage, waterproofing and the parapet and pilaster work, but not the final road or footpath surfacing.

What the buyer wants

• Build the bridge structure and highway works, including pile caps, in-situ concrete, reinforced concrete deck and parapets, brickwork pilasters, fencing, signage and a retaining wall. • Install client-supplied precast components (cills, beams, side walls) with shear key reinforcement and grout connections, and modify the existing bridge cill. • Complete drainage, ducting, bridge waterproofing, expansion joints and sealing, leaving final road and footpath surfacing out of scope.

Likely requirements

Our reading of the notice. Always check the tender documents.

Most small businesses would be excluded by the need for Network Rail approval, proven rail possession and track safety experience, and the ability to install precast bridge beams and deliver reinforced concrete structures next to a live railway.
