In plain English

A main contractor is looking for a supplier to provide and build a gabion retaining wall at Saltley Viaduct, part of the HS2 rail project. Gabion walls are retaining walls made from wire cages filled with stone, used to hold back soil on slopes or embankments. The work is a one-off package with an estimated value of £500,000 to £1,000,000.

What the buyer wants

• Supply the gabion baskets, Class 6G stone infill, geotextile membrane and Class 6N/6P backfill, with all related components. • Install the gabion baskets with stone infill, place and compact the backfill, and provide all temporary works, plant, lifting, access, labour and supervision needed to finish the job. • Show experience designing (where applicable), supplying and installing gabion retaining structures or similar retaining wall or earthworks in infrastructure, highways or civil engineering, and work to the project specifications and drawings, safely, to programme and with full material certification.

Requirements

What could rule a small business out: A small business without demonstrable experience of gabion or similar retaining wall and earthworks packages in infrastructure, highways or civil engineering, or without the capacity to both supply the materials and carry out the installation with its own plant and lifting equipment, would most likely be ruled out.
